7th, 2012. captions paid for by nbc-universal television good morning. welcome to "today." 7:00 a.m. on the west coast on a friday. i'm matt lauer. >> good morning. i'm savannah guthrie. a new jobs report showing 96,000 jobs last month, significantly fewer than what most analysts expected. the unemployment rate dipped to 8.1%, but that is a reflection of the fact that many people have simply given up looking for work. >> as you might expect, savannah, mitt romney is already out with a statement this morning. he says based on the numbers that president obama is not living up to his promises and that his policies are not working. we'll talk about the numbers and the impact on the presidential race with jim cramer and chuck

todd straight ahead. also, we have news on a case we've been following here for years. former illinois police officer drew peterson now facing up to 60 years behind bars afternoon being convicted of murdering his third wife.

>> who needed this opportunity the most? >> well, mitt romney needed to win what i'd call the convention period. and he did not. i mean, when you look at the democratic convention, each night they had a specific thing they wanted to do. michelle obama did the character. bill clinton did the unprecedented economic argument. and then president obama did the, you know, hey, the -- made the case for looking forward. each night seemed to have a theme that fit together. look at tampa. you did not have the same thing. it was all about trying to fix the likability ratings, but not a lot of memorable specific details for instance on what a mitt romney presidency would look like.

>> yeah. and democrats have been chiding the republicans for not putting more meat on the bones on their ideas. on the other hand, the president's advisers promised there would be specifics in the speech. did you hear any new policy or substance? >> i heard nothing new. more of a -- you know, look, the incumbent trying to make the don't change horses in midstream and making the case that the same ideas he's been advocating that haven't been passed. he will now push to try to them be passed. you didn't hear, you know what, this is going to be how we'll deal with the debt and deficit or entitlement reform or how we'll deal with the housing crisis. you didn't hear anything other than we have to keep on keeping on. it's a tough argument to make, but no choice. >> next big moments in the campaign, the debates. chuck todd we know you'll be there. thank you for your coverage this week. and a programming note, mitt romney will be david gregory's guest on "meet the press." >> thank you, savannah.

prince harry's latest deployment to afghanistan, he's beginning a four-month tour there where he'll be flying apache attack helicopters. tia, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. well, he's known as captain harry wales to the army and he arrived for the start of a four-month deployment. he looked quite relaxed as he was inspecting apaches where he'll be in charge of the gunner as he fights the insurgency. a royal entrance into the war zone as he arrives in helmand province, afghanistan, for his second deployment. >> i extended a warm welcome to captain wales. >> reporter: his deployment may be a surprise to us but it could explain why he let his hair down and took his clothes off in las vegas last month. >> he was in vegas because he knew he was going to be deployed. he was letting off steam, probably a little too much.

>> reporter: harry will deal with a different kind of steam in helmand. no longer king of the pool party, he will soon be flying apaches in the volatile afghan province, providing air cover for military missions. >> working together with his squadron, he'll be in a difficult and demanding job. and i ask that he be left to get on with his duties and allow to focus and delivering support to the coalition troops on the ground. >> reporter: stationed at camp past y bastion, one of the largest in the country, he won't be far from his other base. his 2008 deployment was kept a secret by the army for fear that he would become a taliban target. but his mission was cut short when an australian gossip magazine leaked pictures of the prince in combat. he's been itching to get back ever since, but will his vegas antics put him in the outs with his military mates? >> there's no question that the army would have been disappointed with the publicity

surrounding his antics in vegas, but the truth is he's a good apache pilot and one of the best in his squad. >> reporter: as harry returns to military fatigues, his royal duties and charity work will be put on hold, at least for now. while he serves in the most important role of his life and for his country. as a british soldier, not a prince. well, those vegas pictures may have gotten him in trouble with the palace, but he has dozens of supports waiting for him in helmand and pictures have surfaced of his comrades in arms stripping down and saluting their prince. but matt, i should mention that it is getting chilly in afghanistan. so we don't expect any more stripteases. >> that's a little weird. thank you very much. we appreciate that. it's now 14 after the hour. here's savannah. >> thank you. officials at yosemite

national park are extending an alert on the hanta virus after eight deaths were reported. we have more. >> reporter: yeah, the alerts have now gone out internationally on this because over the last couple of months people have visited yosemite from all over the world. this is a serious outbreak and the third of the cases turn out to be fatal. the cdc originally thought 10,000 people were exposed to the virus here and they believe that number is even higher. because the virus can take as long as six weeks to develop some of the symptoms that people might notice, health officials believe that the number of cases will rise. >> hi there. welcome to yosemite. >> reporter: california's yosemite national park is known for its majestic peaks. stunning waterfalls and vast wilderness. but this summer it's become infamous for a deadly outbreak. >> information about the virus. >> reporter: now along with the park, park rangers are handing out information on avoiding infections spread by rodents and their droppings.

>> really really are out with education in the outreach. >> reporter: they have closed down the popular tent cabins a village of 91 camping tents after finding deer mice inside the walls. >> there's a lot of the outbreaks occurring because we're at the end of summer. it's the time of year where people are outside and coming in contact with the infected road ends. >> reporter: it can mimic the flu virus and can take up to six weeks to appear. >> you get these sort of chills and fever. nausea. and that progresses eventually to a pulmonary infection that can be quite dangerous. >> reporter: because yosemite attracts people from around the world, the threat has spread quickly. health officials in france are now investigating two possible cases linked to yosemite. but the hanta virus isn't the only one concerning public health officials. a 7-year-old is recovering from

a disease also spread by rodents. one that was supposed to have been wiped out centuries ago -- bubonic plague. >> we don't want any other children to have to go through this. >> the war on the west nile virus is far from over. >> reporter: elsewhere, cases of the deadly west nile virus have surfaced in more than 38 states. >> 118 cases have been confirmed. seven oklahomans have died. >> reporter: more than 1,900 people have been sickened and 87 have died so far this year from the west nile virus. experts say the best way to prevent the disease is to avoid mosquito bites. >> it's just common sense. make sure when you're outside, especially at dusk and dawn, you wear insect repellent that you even spray over clothes because mosquitoes can bite you through thin layers. >> reporter: and back here at yosemite, the 91 cabins where most of the cases originated have been closed indefinitely. park rangers are handing out warnings to those coming here, but many are not coming. there were a lot of cancellations over labor day and

savannah, park attendance is down dramatically. back to you. >> thank you, janet. let us get a check of the rest of the top stories of the morning. natalie is off today, but tamron hall is over at the newsdesk. >> good morning. the fbi is investigating the motive behind a plane hoax on thursday that forced a u.s. airways flight to turn around midair and head back to the airport. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams has more. good morning, pete. >> reporter: tamron, good morning. a passenger aboard a flight from pennsylvania to see family in texas is at the center of all this. but the fbi says he was a completely innocent victim unaware of what was in store. christopher shell of philadelphia intended thursday to be a celebration of his birthday. instead, he was twice taken into custody by police at two different airports in handcuffs. he had just settled in for a morning u.s. airways flight to dallas when he posted this on his facebook page -- we just

spent a half hour in the air to be notified that the plane has technical difficulties and had the fly back. steve mcneil was seated next to him. >> he was going back to texas for his birthday. his company that he works for was paying for him to go back. said he had just broke up with his girlfriends. >> reporter: a stunned christopher shell was escorted off the plane in handcuffs, the subject of an investigation for possible explosives based on a phoned in tip. but nothing hazardous was found and police concluded he was actually the victim. >> all indications are that this was a hoax and a pretty nasty trick was played on a passenger. >> reporter: investigators say an anonymous male caller told airport police that shell was carrying liquid explosives on his way to texas. late thursday, the fbi questioned that former girlfriend and her new boyfriend. investigating whether the hoax call was an act of revenge for a personal dispute. federal officials say it was no joke, costing tens of thousands in jet fuel, delayed airport

operations and passenger inconvenience. but christopher shell's day of adventure wasn't quite over when he eventually got to dallas late thursday, local police were waiting. they arrested him on some existing warrants in texas, but they stressed that those older charges had nothing to do with the hoax call in philadelphia. authorities say they believe they do know who called in the phony tip and whoever is arrested will likely face serious federal charges. authorities want to make it clear that such hoaxes will not be tolerated. >> all right, pete, thank you very much. a new study suggests that women who possess genes that make them more susceptible to breast cancer have a higher r k risk.3 c3 es posible que tengan un 43% de when a semicame roaring by at high speed.

last night's mtv music award from miley cyrus to rihanna who shared an embrace with chris brown. >> we want to begin with drew peterson convicted of murdering his third wife kathleen savio. we'll talk to his sister-in-law. first kevin tibbles. >> it's as if drew peterson never met a camera he didn't like. with his third wife dead and fourth wife missing, he always played the jokester. while this morning his television days are over, drew peterson awakens a convicted murder. it took the jury 13 hours to find the flamboyant bolingbrook police officer drew peterson guilty of the murder of his third wife kathleen savio. >> the defendant in this case was a coward and a bully.

>> reporter: eight and a half years after her death savio's family is jubilant. >> finally someone heard kathleen's fly. twelve people did the right thing. >> savio was found dead in the waterless bathtub of his suburban home in 2004. originally it was ruled an accidental drowning. then when peterson's fourth wife stacy went missing in october 2007, suspicions were raised. savio's body was exhumed, her death ruled a homicide. extensive searches for 23-year-old stacy peterson turned up nothing and she remains missing to this day. drew peterson insisted stacy had run off with another man. he spoke with matt in november 2007. >> can you look me straight in the eye and tell me you had nothing to do with the death of your third wife kathy or the disappearance of your fourth wife stacy. >> i can look right in your eye and say i had nothing to do with either of those instances. >> reporter: but acquaintances

of stacy came forward with stories they say she told them, how peterson had threatened to kill her and how peterson had asked her to provide him for an alibi for the night savio died. >> i couldn't come up with any reason, in my mind, to not put him at the scene beyond a reasonable doubt. >> reporter: in 2008, the state of illinois passed a law allowing such hearsay evidence to be used in court. it was dubbed the drew law. >> will this conviction stick? in my opinion, we will end up .supreme court of the united states on this case. >> reporter: peterson's defense team immediately said it plans to appeal his conviction for savio's murder. >> it was hearsay evidence allowed un, unprecedented amount. >> reporter: now the friends and family of stacy say they want drew peterson charged with her death as well. >> no matter what, still have it pay the price for stacy. i still believe that's around

the corner. >> reporter: peterson faces a maximum of 60 years in jail. illinois does not have the death penalty. he'll be sentenced november 26th. true to form he was overheard saying as he was leaving the courtroom, i guess this will ruin my christmas. matt. >> kevin tibbles in illinois this morning, kevin, thank you very much. kathleen savio's sister was in court for the verdict. she's with us along with her attorney. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> i'll get to the verdict in a second. you heard it. talk to me about what it's been like to sit in the courtroom over the last few weeks. >> i wasn't allowed in there much because i did testify. i was only in there for the closing statements. >> and what was it like to see him and watch his democratic, too, as kevin just mentioned, he was always playing to the cameras as he has been for the last eight or so years. what was it like to sit through that. >> very typical drew, typical

sociopath, all full of himself. >> when you heard the jury's verdict of guilty, just give me your immediate reaction. >> when i first heard it, i was like, did i really hear that or do i want to hear it so bad that's what i heard. i was excited. i think that's what i heard. i looked at my sister next to me. i said, did i hear guilty. she looks, starts screaming, guilty. i thought i heard it. you wait and want it so much. >> these last eight years you talk about a civil suit being filed. you talk about your sister's body being exhumed, another autopsy. >> all horrible, yes. >> you say you always knew he was responsible for your sister's death. what made you so sure? >> just by the way he had treated her and things she had told us over the years. he had great motive. between the motive and the way he had been, just knowing drew.

she told me multiple times he said he was going to kill me. she was terrified of the guy. >> john, there was a lot of controversy and a lot of talk during this trial there might be a mistrial because there was so much hearsay allowed into this based on drew's law out there in illinois. do you think that law and hearsay now jeopardizes this verdict? >> not at all, matt. the illinois supreme court has ruled on the constitutionality of it, upheld it. it's commonly referred to as the voice from the grave. basically it says someone can't benefit by silencing another person who has incriminating testimony against them and it's fair. >> but do you think that drew peterson could have been convicted or would have been convicted were it not for that hearsay? >> it would have been more difficult, but this is just the perfect crime just got a little more difficult to commit. all things considered it's equitable, fair, constitutional and the conviction will stand

that. >> i'm interested in your take on this. stacy peterson's family hopes the attention will turn to their loved one. what would you like to say to them about the perseverance they are going to need and the time it perhaps could take for them to see justice? >> well, i've talked to them. i told them, i said, eventually it will come. i'm praying for them. anything i can do to help you i will definitely do. it's tough losing someone you love. i miss my sister desperately. at least i know where she is and what happened. not knowing, i can't imagine how horrible that has to be. >> anna, i thank you for your time this morning. we really appreciate it. john, always good to see you. thank you as well. >> thank you. >> you can see more on the story on "dateline," 10:00, 9:00 central time right here on nbc. let's get a check of the weather from al roker. >> thanks very much. a rick of strong storms from

my life. i'm pretty sure my dad is going to freak out. my mom is probably going to cry. it makes me feel like a horrible person. >> kate and sabrina with us now along with executive producers of "breaking amish" good morning to all of you. >> good morning. >> i have to ask you, talk about culture shock, when you were first approached for being part of a television show, reality television show, given how you grew up, did you even have a concept of what that meant, kate. >> i don't think it really sank in right away. i don't think i realized exactly what everything held. >> sabrina, how difficult was it to walk away from this very tight-knit community? >> you basically give up everything to find out what's out there. i mean, it's hard. >> kate, you're the bishop's daughter, right? i assume you're like any preacher's kid, you're held up and people look at you as an

example. this must have been kind of scandalous. >> a lot. >> what happened with the dui? do you think that's part of the fact you've been sheltered, now you're out in the world and can do anything you want and you made a bad decision. >> i think it was really a bad decision and a huge mistake, just me being stupid and not thinking things clearly. >> so sabrina, take us through it. you grew up in this tight community, you're a mennonite, you have some more modern convenience than amish do. you come to new york city, what is your reaction? >> i pretty much freaked out because i like being outside. i was never really -- i had no idea what to expect even. when i got here all i saw was concrete and could not see the sky that much. from where i'm from there's always wide open spaces and trees and grass. there's really none of that here. there is but it's so small

compared to what i was used to. i was used to acres and acres of it so it was hard. >> it must have been overwhelming, kate, what was your reaction? >> well, my first reaction was like it's so loud. >> it is that for sure. >> let me turn to shannon and eric. what made you want to do a series like this. i have to ask you, did you concern about exploiting young people who have not been exposed to this media culture, this spotlight. shannon, i'll let you take that? >> all of the people that -- first of all, we were down in lancaster county for over a year and a half doing research. we had an amish and mennonite produce that reached out to our cast and knew them personally. each and every person on the show had already planned on leaving. it was something that was important to them. so we just made it possible for them to do that with a safety net and with others that felt the same. >> very quickly, eric, was it difficult to shoot in these communities? >> yeah. you have to be very respectful

of everybody. you have to go in with a small crew, similar to a news crew and really be respectful of the area and the beliefs of the people we're filming. >> i know one of the themes is whether kate and sabrina you go back to your communities. i see you in traditional wear this morning. is that a hint? >> they are staying silent on that one. okay. we'll have to watch and see. kate and sabrina, thank you for your time. appreciate it. we want to remind everybody "breaking amish" airs sunday night on tlc. coming up next from one direction to rihanna and chris brown, all the highlights from last night's vma after this. this morning on cooking with giada, make ahead recipes, "today's" contributor giada de laurentiis. make them in the morning, throw in the oven. good to see you. first is tomato and bread pudding. >> this time of year people have a lot of tomatoes. something to do with a ton of tomatoes and something to do with them. start by making a custard. >> what do i do. >> break up eggs, salt and pepper. >> i'm going to add tomatoes. if you use bigger tomatoes, cook it a little longer to get the water out, otherwise it ends up being watery. kind of cook these -- wow, put some pepper in there, al. >> you know, some spice.

>> salt and pepper in this. you've got to cook these down a little bit. >> all right. >> now let these cook for a couple of minutes just to soften them. i add it to my pan where i have multi-grain bread. use any kind of bread you want, quite frankly. whatever bread you want. bake in the oven, stale or fresh. i like to add multi-grain, makes it a little tastier. pour the custard on top. also sprinkle with basil for color just like that. then we top it with parmesan cheese, bake 375 for 30 minutes and voila. >> this is italian, though. >> are you going to try it? >> yes. >> do it in the morning, day before, sit in the refrigerator and bake it off before dinner. >> next. >> manicotti, sausage and cheese. you're going to make an italian

sauce, a mixture of a little milk, cream, heat that up, add one and a half cups of parmesan. a cheese sauce. >> italian. >> add a little basil. want the parmesan cheese to melt. i have sausage took out of the casings, glaze with garlic, wine. frozen peas. >> good color. >> i'm all about color. i like it. mix the ricotta, cheese, sausage. mix together like this. take some of that. this is a giada pour, not al. delicate and just a little bit. just a little more. a little bit more. that's good. okay. perfect. >> what did you just say? >> stop, stop, stop. mix this all together and you have a filling. take that.

san francisco home before heading to a yacht harbor in alameda where he stole the boat. they were spotted by a commercial fisherman who spoke to the dad. this is the boat seen around 4:00 a.m. off pilar point. he talked priestly about sailing to mexico. his daughter was last seen wearing a white dress. his son hat a spongebob squarepants shirt. police issued a warrant for his arrest on kidnapping charges. meteorologist christina loren says it will be a beautiful weekend out there. >> it doesn't get much better. we live in the bay area. already we have fantastic conditions normally, but this day in particular is going to be one of those days where you'll be motivated to get outdoors. just about perfect everywhere, full-on sunshine in san francisco, 67 there, 78 in san jose, and 71 degrees in santa cruz. even our outlying cities aren't going to be hoo too hot today. 85, that's it today.

i'm going to make it look better. neutral, this is a cherry. quadruple zero steel wool. the more zeros, the finer the wool. you take a little and go with the grain nice and easily. don't scratch. what you're doing is giving your wood a facial. you go back and forth with the grain, a little back and forth. watch when i wipe this away how nice this looks. you get a heat ring on a dining room table, you do this and it takes it right away. >> howard's restore a finish. different colors. very good. >> what is the best solution to use for hair being clogged in the shower drain. >> we had that the other day. had to call a guy in. >> your number one clog is with hair, whether it's in the shower drain or vanity. take the stopper out. when you go underneath your sink, this makes the stopper go
